You flip a switch, and lights guide you into the room. You turn the knob on a stove, and a steady flame appears beneath your pan. You reach for your tap, and water flows into your glass.
While these moments may seem small, they add up to a big impact. They’re not just conveniences – they’re the essential services we all depend on to live comfortably.
At Liberty, we are proud to deliver safe, reliable service right to your doorstep. Our dedicated team works tirelessly to invest in the infrastructure that makes it possible to turn on the lights, cool or heat your home, and keep your family clean and hydrated.
This Infrastructure Week (May 12-16, 2025), we’re recognizing the critical work our teams do to maintain and upgrade the infrastructure that delivers the utility services you depend on. Check out a few of the infrastructure projects we are completing to meet your electric, gas, and/or water needs now and in the future.
New well
Taney County, Missouri
Work continues on a new well intended to improve service for water customers in Taney County. With drilling completed, the next step will be constructing a new well house, with a goal of bringing the well online by the end of the year. Plans call for the addition of a 188-foot-tall, elevated tank in 2026. As part of the project, Liberty is also working to replace the six-inch mains running through the service territory which will add capacity and improve reliability.
Substation rebuild
Tipton Ford, Missouri
A complete rebuild of the substation in the community of Tipton Ford will improve the reliability of electric service to customers in the area. The two-phase project will involve energizing two separate sets of distribution lines. The 69 kV lines (a lower voltage used for distribution to homes and businesses) are set to be energized in June. The 161 kV system, a higher voltage used for transmission over longer distanceswill be energized next winter.
Line upgrade
Joplin, Missouri
A major upgrade to five miles of 161 kV line – stretching west from Schifferdecker Avenue in Joplin to Liberty’s State Line power station – is set to begin in September. The project will include replacing wooden structures with more durable steel counterparts and switching from single to bundled conductors, which will increase the line’s carrying capacity.
New generators
Riverton, Kansas
This coming winter will see the replacement of the oldest remaining generators at Liberty’s power plant in Riverton. Manufactured in the 1960s, units 10 and 11 were purchased used and installed in 1988. Because of their age, they are no longer supported by the manufacturer. The $62 million replacement project will see the installation of two Siemens SGT-400 industrial gas turbines. The dual-fuel generators are expected to bolster Liberty’s ability to deliver reliable electric service to customers, as well as improve winter weather operations.
Peach state natural gas Advance Meter Reading (AMR) project
Columbus, Georgia
Faster, easier, more accurate – Since January 2024 our Liberty GA team has installed more than 60,000 data encoders (often referred to as ERTs) on meters throughout our service area. These devices electronically read your meter and are the central component for an automated meter reading system (AMR). Similar to a fitness tracker that sends data to your fitness app, ERTs transmit a signal to our new specially equipped trucks. This allows us to capture drive-by readings and eliminate the need for manual reads at each meter each month. This means a lot of things for us and for you:
It’s more efficient. Once fully transitioned, we can read every meter in our service territory in a matter of days. Before this transition, the manual reading process took several weeks.
It’s more accurate. This new technology is highly accurate and can provide almost real-time usage information.
It’s more convenient. Gone will be the days of a technician needing access to your yard, or even home, to read the meter each month. Once all meters are transitioned, the ERTs will transmit the read as our technicians drive by each month.
Main replacement
Baldwin, New York
Baldwin customers are the recipients of a much-needed upgrade. Liberty New York Water replaced 2,100 feet of 70-year-old cast iron water main to provide more reliable service and prevent future water main breaks. This project also helped reduce discolored water and improved water pressure and fire service capabilities for the area. In the old pipes’ place is a stretch of new 20-inch, cement-lined ductile iron main, which is stronger, less corrosive and has a longer life span. Additionally, the pipes are covered with a protective polyethylene wrap that prevents corrosion, minimizes rust and potential leaks, and further adds to their durability. This is especially helpful to protect from the high groundwater levels in this area.?
New well
Litchfield Park, Arizona
To help support the growth in the Goodyear and Litchfield Park communities, Liberty constructed a new well. Located in Litchfield Park, the new well can pump up to 740 gallons per minute (GPM) or one million gallons per day (GPD) of quality drinking water to meet the needs of Liberty’s customers and communities. Adding new water sources – like the new well – to the distribution system allows Liberty to continue delivering safe and reliable water service.
Supporting growth and development
Apple Valley, California
When a developer wanted to expand the Apple Valley Towne Center, Liberty teams were ready to put the water infrastructure in the ground to support the project. Over the course of six weeks, Liberty trenched and installed more than 1500 feet of 12-inch water pipe along with 25 feet of six-inch pipe, providing the infrastructure backbone to deliver water to the expanded Towne Center. In addition to the pipe, Liberty installed connections for domestic, irrigation, and commercial water services, as well as five new fire hydrants to support firefighting capabilities.
The Towne Center expansion includes a large retail building with more than 87,000 square feet of retail space, and will offer economic benefits, jobs, and new shopping experiences for residents and visitors of Apple Valley. Liberty is proud to deliver safe and reliable water service to its current and future customers, as well as help support the growth of the Apple Valley community.
Stronger, safer, and more reliable electric service
Topaz, California
This April, crews completed work in the Topaz area that aims to strengthen infrastructure, decrease potential service disruptions, and reduce the risk of wildfire. Liberty’s team worked with local property owners to safely and efficiently complete the installation or replacement of 58 electric poles and installed approximately 40,000 feet of overhead wire. These key upgrades will reduce the potential for outages and increase the overall durability of the electric system, no matter the time of year or weather conditions.
